A traditional patternmaking technique makes the move from textiles to walls in a bedroom that’s contemporary, while drawing on craft roots.

This bedroom takes quilting as its starting point for a painted wall treatment that’s surprisingly achievable. Resene Fawn Green wraps the main wall and ceiling. Rich brown Resene Caffeine grounds the floor, while skirtings and cornices in Resene Scrub neatly frame the space.
A hand-painted wallpaper effect carries most of the room’s character. Quilt-block shapes are first marked on the wall in a grid formation, then painted by hand within a DIY-cut vinyl stencil (made using materials from Gordon Harris: a metal ruler and a sharp craft knife). Only a single coat of paint is needed for the pattern — a painterly, imperfect approach that gives a softer, handcrafted finish.
Repeated forms create rhythm without overwhelming the room in a pattern that features Resene Cinnamon, Resene Butterfly, Resene Harlequin and Resene Marshland. These bold tones are used sparingly for small hits of vibrancy, while a foreground wall in Resene Olive Green anchors the scheme without competing with it.
The visible brushwork is part of the appeal. A room you’ve made with your hands is one you’ll always feel at home in.
