Ligne Roset’s Togo sofa turns 50 – and gives you the gift of special-edition fabrics

In association with Ligne Roset.

Could Frenchman Michel Ducaroy have had any inkling in 1973 that his Togo design for Ligne Roset would remain so very relevant? A decade and a half after his passing, this iconic piece of furniture much loved for its ergonomic form and embodiment of pure comfort is turning 50, and is only more appealing with age. To make a celebratory mark on the epitome of R&R likened by the designer to a tube of toothpaste folded back on itself, heritage brand Ligne Roset is issuing it in two limited-edition coverings — Atom by Danish company Kvadrat and La Toile du Peintre from French studio Pierre Frey.

MAIN IMAGE & ABOVE The kind of wrinkles you want at 50, quilted pleats of folded upholstery cover the design’s dense foam construction. Only 878 Togo pieces are available worldwide in the bouclé Atom fabric — pictured in the main image at the top of this page in (from left) Confetti, Labradorite and Birch — inspired by fragments of pointillist landscape paintings, and the La Toile du Peintre fabric (above) that reinterprets an artwork by US-born, France-dwelling painter and sculptor Heather Chontos.

The Togo sofa, Togo Fireside chair and Togo footstool form a highly functional modular system; you could start with one piece and expand over time, using several sizes of sofa and the chair separately, joining them together, and reconfiguring them with the greatest of ease. Handmade for five decades in the village of Briord in eastern France, where Ligne Roset has its HQ, this is a classic investment item that history tells us will make a statement in your home now and forever.
