Behind the scenes of our August/September issue with editor Alice Lines

My family and I have been living in our current home for 18 months now, and in that time I’ve learned I’m really not that keen on making quick decisions when it comes to interior upgrades. The same six tile samples have been leaning against our kitchen splashback since I picked them up this time last year, and the bathroom updates we considered when we first reviewed the real-estate photos haven’t even had a look in!
Meanwhile, the investments and updates that are getting bumped to the top of our to-do list are those that’ll ensure the exterior of our home remains weather-proof in all seasons, though the quote for the scaffolding we need to get the weatherboards stained and joinery repaired makes me wince. There also seems to be no end to the hardware-store trips for fixtures and fittings to ensure everything keeps functioning at its best, not to mention my visits to the garden centre for a steady flow of goodness for our plot.
Although I’m entirely comfortable with my snail’s pace, I admire those who crack on with creating their dream dwellings. In this issue, we have a stellar line-up of homeowners who’ve taken their projects to the next level by engaging notable architects and interior designers to hone their vision.
Aesthetics are often what draw us to an abode, and in this issue we show and tell how to perfect the art of arranging furniture and objects to please the eye while setting a mood. Ultimately, our ongoing happiness is determined by how a house looks and feels and how well it functions, with thoughtful design making all the difference. Take tips from the special people, places and pieces we’ve profiled here to find new ways to live the life you want at the speed that suits you best.
