If the precision is in the structured crafting, then the joy is in the finer details. Leather-goods house Yu Mei has introduced their first womenswear range, a capsule wardrobe of 36 mix-and-match pieces in natural fibres such as cashmere and silk, but it’s the custom brass buttons that elevate the collection. Designed by architect and artist Gerard Dombroski, the buttons are cast from material salvaged from the Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington building where the Yu Mei studio is based. They not only finesse pieces such as the classic shirt in olive wool check (shown here with chartreuse cashmere gloves, a tailored pant in Americano wool suiting and a lambskin Bobby bag), but they key in beautifully with Yu Mei’s ethos to minimise waste in a circular model of production.
