Walking on sunshine with Baya

A couple of accent pieces help make summer moments more memorable.

In association with Baya.

When tūī start to drink their fill of flax, kōwhai and flowering–cherry nectar, it’s a sign that summer is in the air. It’s nature’s way of telling us to fling off the winter covers from outdoor furniture, dust the seats and surfaces, and get ready for the alfresco lifestyle we’ve been looking forward to for months.
The new-season range of outdoor cushions and rugs from Baya will inspire you to bring directional design to your deck or patio, giving an easy refresh to spaces that, in the longer, warmer evenings, often works harder than our living room itself.
Textiles in the great outdoors must work hard, too, and Baya’s collections, which are designed in Aotearoa, rely on time-honoured craftsmanship teamed with cutting-edge techniques to make cushions and rugs that are just as beautifully constructed as those you would use on your sofa or as floor coverings indoors.

MAIN IMAGE In shades of Cumin, Eucalyptus and Olive, the Lonsdale collection of outdoor rugs sprinkles contemporary style over summer. TOP Textural and graphic, the Scout cushion in Eucalyptus is made from 100% recycled PET fibre. ABOVE Pelorus, a range of handwoven PET rugs, is a new-season release in warm, earth-inspired tones such as Sand. Pair with a throw for relaxed evenings.

These are not products that are extra (read: loud and colourful, perhaps like some of your friends) but, rather, set the scene in a low-key yet luxe way, be it for a quiet weekend stretched out to read or listen to your fave holiday vibes under the trees, or convivial get-togethers.
In tones of Sand and Grey, Pelorus rugs are 100% recycled PET (the planet be praised) but handwoven — an exquisite eclipse of tradition and innovation. Heavily textured but soft underfoot, they epitomise easy-going coastal cool so are perfect for the holiday home or poolside. Their mottled tones are forgiving, too — useful for the little spills and thrills of summer entertaining.
Also made from recycled PET fibres, but more tightly woven, the Lonsdale collection of rugs in Cumin, Olive and Eucalyptus is a durable alternative with a more contemporary slant. This flatweave, with subtle tones of either brown, blue or green that reflect the sand, sea or bush, brings an outdoor room together naturally. The good news is that you can readily transfer the rug indoors if you need a little softness under, say, a dining table or in the spare bedroom.

TOP Cross over to the warmer side, with the Kinley cushion in Almond. ABOVE Mirror an indoor setting by using a rug to tie furniture together — Lonsdale in Olive — and comfy up the couches with mix-and-match cushions in complementary tones.

This grounded palette continues in cushions with textures that have real touchable appeal. Tranquillity is woven into the warp and weft with colours such as mangrove green, almond brown, slate and ivory, in covers crafted from recycled PET yarns. Bring movement to the scheme with designs that are muted and modern — and encourage rest and repose.
Dressing an outdoor chair with a big, comfy cushion in a graphic design or adding a lumbar to a lounger makes all the difference. Just put on the mix-tape, kick off your jandals and relax into it.
Making the most of summer is in our DNA. The Baya Summer 2025 collection celebrates this Kiwi-as rite of passage.
