When you’re an ensuite vying for attention in a capacious home with three living areas, six bedrooms and four other bathrooms, you’d better have something special going for you. Designed by Jane McAulay-Frame of Bespoke Interior Architecture & Design to update an existing dwelling in Auckland’s Coatesville, this one more than holds its own — and not a single element is an opportunity missed.
Responding to a brief for a sophisticated look to bring the ensuite into the present without being overly ‘now’, Jane expertly devised a layout that provides plenty of room for two to move around in and lots of hidden storage. Her minimal, cohesive colour and material palettes create an effect that’s simultaneously tranquil and inspiring.
“With its natural finish, the sandblasted stone forms a sensational backdrop that works in harmony with the more daring, veined stonework to achieve a glamorous yet understated look,” says Jane. “In a warm gunmetal finish, the tapware echoes the feature stone beautifully.”
This handsome tapware is part of a suite of top-quality fixtures and fittings sourced from the extensive collection at leading bathroom supplier Plumbline. This family-owned New Zealand business offers one of the largest product portfolios in the country — a curated choice of timeless traditional and contemporary designs that tie in perfectly here with the ensuite’s colours and textures, hardware and joinery, and even its lighting plan that works in tandem with the abundance of natural light.
“When you step inside this space, it’s truly calming,” says Jane. “Its size is exaggerated and it really feels like quality in its detailing and products. It’s classy and luxurious — like the best hotel bathroom you could dream of.”
