Resene paint project: a ’70s-style sunken lounge

In association with Resene.

Channel the sensual decadence of Ziggy Stardust-era glam rock into an off-the-wall sunken lounge that transports you to another planet.

Send your R&R into the stratosphere with a sunken lounge you can turn into its own private universe. When contained to a distinct area, bold can absolutely be best, and we began our DIY process with a kinda cosmic patterned fabric. Your starting point could equally be an amazing artwork or rug.

The hues in our fabric then informed the Resene colours we chose for this space. Exploring a spectrum of inky hues that subtly shift from charcoal, to blue, to purple, we painted the walls with Resene Carpe Noctem, then made the colour scheme more multidimensional by painting the built-in ledge with Resene Indian Ink and the seat surround with Resene Black Doris. All three shades have a similar depth to ensure cohesion.

Create an immersive sensory experience by taking a similar tonal approach to your soft furnishings and decorative objects. We’ve riffed off our key colours, going for black, blue and purple, and adding a hint of shimmer for visual variety.

Tap into texture with objects in gloss and matte finishes. For example, our lacquered side table contrasts with artisanal objects made from clay and concrete with a moon-rock feel.

We opted to blend our chosen Resene wall colour with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. Its not-too-glossy, not-too-flat finish makes it endlessly practical, providing the durability of an enamel paint plus a level of camouflage for imperfections that’s ideal for a DIY project.
